Private Yoga & Meditation

Yoga is a beautiful system which includes physical poses, breathing practices, meditation, and Ayurveda. Group classes can be helpful but the fact is that we all experience imbalances in our own way. The tools yoga offers to help with these imbalances is not always one-size-fits-all. Whether you are looking to find balance in your life or are interested in going deeper into your personal practice, private yoga could be perfect for you. In our sessions together, we will discuss your goals and then explore what yoga can offer you. We will cover anything from physical postures, breath work, meditation, and how to find balance with lifestyle choices (ie. sleep patterns, self-care practices, food choices, etc). I also love helping people create their own home practice.

In a private session, you will receive the individual attention you deserve and the floor will be open for any questions.

Abhyanga

It's that time of the year again- time for the cold snow, blowing wind.  We're all hunkering down for a different type of holiday season- perhaps one a little more quiet than we are used to.  Many changes and unknowns during what is typically a busy time of the year.

During this time of the year there is one practice, in particular, given to us from Ayurveda that helps keep me calm and grounded:  Abhyanga.

Abhyanga begins with a bit of dry brushing but the pièce de résistance is the full-body, warm oil massage.  This delicious practice has a host of benefits, but here are a some big ones:
  • Increases circulation
  • Lubricates the joints
  • Eliminates impurities from the body
  • Increases mental awareness
  • Calming for the nerves
  • Improves sleep
  • Nourishes the skin
  • Promotes self-love

I think we can all agree that abhyanga is a self-practice ninja warrior, combating the winter season.   When the winter air threatens to dry out the skin, abhyanga is there to keep you lubricated and hydrated.  When sadness, fear, or "what if's" of this new type of holiday season sets in, abhyanga is there to calm the nerves and focus the mind.  The skin is the largest organ of your body and when it is warm and oiled up, it can help your entire body run at peak performance.

Let's talk about how to practice abhyanga.  I'm going to give you the full version and a short version so you can be sure you can do this practice every day throughout the holiday season.

Full abhyanga:
  1. Grab your dry brush (or a dry wash cloth) and start brushing your skin moving away from your heart.  Do long strokes along your long bones and circles on the joints.  Dry brushing gets a layer of impurities off your skin and opens up the pores so your skin can really soak up the oil.
  2. Warm your oil*.  Once warm (check the temperature on your wrist before you dive in), rub the oil on your body moving toward your heart.  Long strokes on your long bones and circles on the joints.  Cover your entire body- you can even get your hair.  (I oil my hair maybe once or twice a week but on the other days I just skip the top of my head and get the rest of my body.)  There's no need to hold back on the amount of oil you use- get oily!  Extra bonus:  Say prayers, positive affirmations, or listen to uplifting music to infuse yourself with good vibes while you oil up.
  3. Once you're sufficiently oiled, let it soak in for anywhere from 5-40 minutes.  Get your clothes ready for your day, meditate, or read a book.
  4. Finally, shower off!  Be careful when you step in to the shower if you've oiled the bottoms of your feet- it WILL be slippery!  There's no need to use soap (unless you put oil in your hair- then you'll want to use your regular shampoo/conditioner regime) just rub your hands along your body to clear off the oil.  Not all of the oil will come off in the shower so you'll towel off the remainder.  I'd suggest having a designated "abhyanga towel".

The short version (perfect for bedtime):
  1. Dry brush your feet- tops, sides, bottoms.
  2. Warm your oil* and oil your feet.
  3. Throw on your socks and you're already done!
*The oil you use differs depending on your specific constitution, but sesame is a good go-to for anyone.  Or, if you're going to get really fancy, you can order actual Abhyanga Oil.

Traditionally, abhyanga is practiced in the morning before jumping in the shower.  If this is not going to work in your schedule, you can practice abhyanga at night.  If you have trouble falling asleep, make sure you do AT LEAST the short version of abhyanga every night before bed.

Try abhyanga.  You won't regret it!
